I arrived at Asahikawa Station from Biei. There, on the adjacent platform, stood a Kiha 40—now close to its final run.

The dry, clattering rhythm of its engine echoed through the station with a certain loneliness. Even today, this aging veteran was quietly attending to its duties, just as it always had.
